I had the chance earlier this week to see and interview Loney Dear at a show in Brooklyn. I was looking forward to a great show, as his album Dear John is one of my favorites to come out this year so far. But possibly my favorite part of the night was getting to hear and find out about the opening act, singer Lia Ices. Unknown to me at the time, Ices' set was completely captivating, with haunting piano driven numbers and sultry vocals that could give Cat Power's Chan Marshall a run for her money. Ices' debut disc, Necima came out in 2008 and she has already started writing songs for the follow up this past Winter up in Vermont, with recording likely to begin this Summer. She also just premiered a video for the song, "You Will" this past week which was directed by Dylan Eastgaard, and shot in Vermont. You can catch her live this coming May 17 opening for Iron and Wine at Abron Arts Center.
