One of the most prolific and often underlooked songwriters of his generation, Matthew Ryan, adeptly captures the heartbreak, struggles and triumphs of the everyman, like few can. With a catalogue of work that goes back to 1997, Ryan has put out 11 LP's in just under 12 years, ranging from some of his solo work, Mayday, From a Late Night Highrise, and his most current disc, Matthew Ryan vs. The Silver State, to the side project, Strays Don't Sleep. In between currently recording his next solo LP, Ryan unveiled an impromptu side project he's been working on The Dead Satellites, with Rami Jaffee and Greg Richling. The trio recently threw up a myspace page, where they have two new songs streaming, one of which is the protest song, "Shook Down." We had the opportunity recently to ask Matthew some questions about the new project and song, how his next solo album is shaping up, and his recent trip to Italy. Check it out below.
BTB- What can you tell us about your newest project, The Dead Satellites? MR- It's hard to explain, we have no real goal other than to create outside of our own designs. It's a good thing cause it opens you up. Sometimes we create invisible borders within our own definitions of who we are and what we do. Creativity doesn't have to be gravity. The Dead Satellites are letting me explore some other characters.
BTB- The first song you guys posted, “Shook Down” is a bit of a protest song? Can you talk about it? And is the protest song a lost art form? MR- Sadly, it seems that protest songs are viewed as passe, or even worse useless. I disagree. But I can't really guess what other people feel about them as an art form. In recent years there has been major efforts by some government interests to make artists with opinions seem goofy, misguided or sappy. But artists are citizens as well, we're humans that maybe see the world a little differently from others. I believe those of us that are for real have something important to offer the social/political dialogue. With Shook Down I wanted to imagine a growing coup. I believe the institutions that keep us educated, employed, healthy, hopeful and safe are important. They need to be re-imagined and re-designed to ensure equality of opportunity and welfare in a changed world. I suspect there is a culture of privilege for some of us, a culture where things that are complex to most, are simply available to a handful in contrast. We have to resist the development of a caste system. We already having an exploding service class that has virtually no upward mobility or rights. It's unforgivable. And selfishly, sooner or later it will head to a great ugliness. None of us want that. Corporations have got to value their employees, from the bottom up. I believe that the concept of companies to big to fail is wrong-headed because as is true in so many things, as something grows beyond reasonable management, the employees become less human in the management's eyes. It often becomes simply obsessed with the bottom line rather than what's the "right" thing to do. We have to remember and reconnect and re-intimate ourselves with the human dignity in all of us. So much of what I see right now, the things done to people's savings, retirement, future... Well, so much of it is bottom line driven crusades with no real respect for human dignity and hope.
BTB- How did you get hooked up with Greg Richling and Rami Jaffee? MR- Greg reached out to me late last year. Originally it was gonna be kind of an "all star" cast of various artists that Greg and Rami knew and liked. Some more famous, some more underground. But I did my work on Shook Down and Greg got excited. We started to think maybe Dead Satellites could be a more streamlined collaboration.
BTB- Are there any thoughts of releasing an album at some point? or is it just posting some songs right now and seeing where it goes? How much material have you guys worked on? MR- We're on a Kerouac trip. We don't really have a destination in mind. I don't know if we'll release an album. I don't know if we'll ever play a live show. We really have no expectations or needs from these songs. We just want to offer something to the ether that hopefully has meaning in people's lives. We just started working on our 3rd song.
BTB- I hear a lot of older people say that our generation and the younger generation of today are apathetic, that we don't take up social causes like they did? Do you think that's true after what just happened in the last election? MR- I believe many in the younger generations are perplexed by our ability to divide and instigate trouble through personal views imposed on all. I believe that generations behind us take equality of opportunity and the beauty in diversity as understood rights. I don't think they're apathetic, I think they're confused and probably worried about what kind of mess we're gonna leave for them. That being said, I do feel a sense of entitlement from many of them that is troubling. Part of that is our own fault. These generations have been bombed like Baghdad with such thorough marketing from the time their vision sharpened. It's unprecedented, and I don't know what the repercussions of that will be. We should be ashamed of ourselves as far as I'm concerned. We should know the difference between want and need.
BTB- Switching gears a bit. You've released 11 albums in 11 years, it seems like you must always be writing? Can you take us through your song writing process? How does that work for you? MR- I write when I need to. I don't think much about the process. I'm just glad when it happens.
BTB- What would you say is the greatest thing you've learned between the first album up until now? MR- Only listen to your gut.
BTB- Would you have done anything differently, looking back? MR- I would've listened to my gut sooner.
BTB- Do musicians now have it easier or much harder, with the way the industry/business is now? MR- It's what it is. You either do it because you have to or you don't do it. You always had to have an almost delusional sense of faith to be an artist. We're dependent on invisible houses. People still value it, we're gonna be alright.
BTB- You wrapped up a tour across Italy recently, what was that like for you? MR- It was absolutely beautiful. I can't wait to go back. Italians are wonderful people. Great lovers of music and amazing architects.
BTB- You've been known to be a bit of a movie critic on your myspace blogs, last movie you rented? And how was it? MR- Nixon. I loved it. Much better than I expected. Really great. It's kind of like Britney Spears saved the world.
BTB- Lastly, your working on your next solo LP, what can you tell us about it so far? How far along in the process? And any tentative release date? MR- I'm still writing. This record is the beginning of a new air for me. I can feel that kind of change coming. Like the difference between summer and autumn. The songs are pure. I've been recording at home, I'm getting better at engineering, so I may just keep doing it this way. I don't have a label right now (don't know if I need one), so, a release date is impossible to say. I don't even know how I'll release it. I may just drop it from a helicopter like candy for kids in a war zone.... In reality, I love the physical tradition of music. I don't like just being a tab on iTunes. I want to be held and considered beyond a moment of judgement. I don't know, I still want to reach people. That's the tough thing today, the flood is so massive, all the info, all the entertainment, all the "please love me" out there. You can't even see the rooftops some days. I want to be a rooftop.
We talked about Brooklyn's The Antlers new LP, Hospice a while back prior to the albums release, and we've been meaning to get back to give it another mention since coming out in the beginning of the month. You can stream the album in full below, which is the best way to hear the disc, as it is an album that flows best when listening to it from start to finish. The album which delves into weighty topics of love and loss, pain, recovery and how one moves on, is all at once subtle, restrained and intricate. The almost two year time it took to finish the CD is evident, as singer Peter Silberman crafted an album with many tiny details that give it a rich depth and emotion, holding back where others might push the envelope. You can give it a listen for yourself below, or you can download the album here.
Ex-Distillers frontwoman Brody Dalle's long rumored and buzzed about new project, Spinnerette, is finally ready to unleash her new full length self titled LP on June 2nd. Talked about since as far back as 2007, Dalle and former Distillers guitarist Tony Bevilacqua were even signed and later negotiated their way out of their record contract, before getting to where they are now. Fast forward to this past January, and the pair put out a four-song EP, Ghetto Love, as a pre-cursor to the new LP, which featured the heavy, distortion filled track of the same name. The new disc, was recorded at Pink Duck studios in California, and features Dalle working with multi-instrumentalist Alain Johannes, drummer Jack Irons and Bevilacqua.

UK singer/songwriter Ed Harcourt has never been one to be afraid to get personal in his music, and on his new EP Russian Roulette, due out on May 5th (Dovecote Records) he sticks to that same winning formula. His new 6 track 'mini album', which is his first new work since 2006's A Beautiful Lie , is meant to be a buffer of sorts for fans, 'till his new full length comes out sometime next year. The six tracks delve into some recent highs and lows that Harcourt experienced earlier in the year, like on the track, "Caterpillar" about his newborn daughter Roxy, who had been placed in an incubator after birth. Describing the experience Harcourt says, "It's the first song I've written about her. She was a little ill and we waited for her in the hospital for the chrysalis so we could take her home." On the title track, "Russian Roulette" he adds, "We've all got that one acquaintance who acts out of their league, it's a constant pain. But you still love them.. Every fucking singer is that typical molotov cocktail of insecurity and arrogance. It's no excuse unless you can back it up." The new Ep was recorded and mixed in just the span of a few days with London based producer Dave Lynch. As for tour dates, Harcourt currently just has a few select shows scheduled in the UK, with plans in the works to return to the US for some dates in May and June. Stay tuned.

After nearly a three year hiatus, Canadian ambient/folk singer Patrick Watson is back on the map. Watsons 2006 sophomore LP, Close to Paradise , featuring the intimate tracks, "The Great Escape" and "The Storm" earned him the prestigous 2007 Polaris music Prize in Canada (think the UK's Mercury Prize). A hard act to follow, but Watson has just announced plans for his latest effort, titled Wooden Arms, which will be released as follows, Canada April 28th, US May 5th, UK & Europe May 11th. Along with the new album, Watson unveiled a new website, Wooden-Arms.com, where he is streaming one of the new tracks, as well as announcing plans for a new tour which sees him hitting Europe and North America.

In the second installment of our 'Field Recordings' series we caught up with the young, nu-folk sensation out of Belgium, Bram Vanparys, aka The Bony King of Nowhere. In this first of two parts we capture Bram playing the title track off his new album, "Alas My Love" in an old Abbey from the 7th century, De Sint-Baafsabdij in his hometown of Gent. (part two to follow next week)
His album 'Alas My Love' is out now on Helicopter Records.
The powerful Austin, TX trio, Ume, are geared for big things in 2009. The band just recently released their new 5 song EP, Sunshower that delivers the bands high energy, wide ranging sound. Led by dynamic frontwoman Lauren Lagner Larson, the band do their best to defy genres or labels, going from raw punk rock all the way to delicately orchestrated numbers on the new EP, mixing equal parts early 90's Breeders, with hints of My Bloody Valentine. From the beautiful slow builder "Sunshower" to the the explosive "'Conductor", the band flat out bring it on the new disc, leaving you looking for more. With the backing support of some big name fans, like Gang of Four bassist and Pampelmoose founder Dave Allen, the band have been garnering a good share of buzz, including a stop at this years SXSW music showcase. Right now the band have tentative plans for a full length release later in the year, stay tuned.
I've been following the guys in the Nashville based band, Paper Route ever since randomly finding them on a compilation disc of Tennesee musicians called 'Ten out of Tenn' back in 2005, with their simply haunting track, "Second Chances." Since then, there has been talk of a full length that never seemed to materialize, as the band put out a few EP's along the way, including last years Are We All Forgotten (to read our review click here), which showcased their ability to create sweeping, grand electronic/rock. Fans will be happy to know though that the group has finally wrapped up their full length debut, titled Absence, and it will get a release date of April 28th on Universal Motown. The band, who has been out on the road for most of the past year, kick off another leg of their tour this coming April 2nd, playing dates with Copeland, and Brooke Waggoner. see dates below.

Just the other day we were telling you about the new Matthew Ryan side project called the Dead Satellites, that sees him collaborating with producer and members of The Wallflowers, Greg Richling, and Rami Jaffee. Well, some more info on the new project is trickling in, including the band adding a second song over on their myspace page titled, "If I Wanted You I Could Have You." The trio is also offering a free download of the previous track we had spoke of, "Shook Down" if you go here "http://cache.reverbnation.com/widgets/swf/31/widgetPlayerMicro.swf?emailPlaylist=artist_405799&backgroundcolor=1D1A1A&font_color=F61607&posted_by=artist_405799&shuffle=&autoPlay=false or by just downloading it over on their myspace. Ryan, who has never been one to shy away from tackling a social issue, says this of "Shook Down", ..."It's a song about the economic narcissism of the insiders that lead to our current financial crisis," ... "The song is essentially calling for a coup, or at the very least, accountability." He later goes on to add ... "On a personal note, I've watched my Dad go from a fairly comfortable retirement, to a stressed malaise, It pisses me off. He worked 35 years, saved every penny, invested what he earned, and is now feeling took." In addition to the new project, Ryan is also currently working on his next solo LP, the follow up to 2008's Matthew Ryan vs The Silver State.
Having already spawned up to five hit singles across Europe, pop/punk singer Ida Maria from Norway, is ready to try her luck across the Ocean in the US. Her debut disc Fortress ‘round My Heart has been out for some time overseas, but is out digitally today in the States. The album features two of her biggest hits “Oh My God” and “I Like You So Much Better When You’re Naked.” Ida first gained attention in her native country of Norway after winning two national competitions for unknown artists, the Zoom urørt in 2006 and Urørtkonkurransen in 2007, later going on to tackle the UK and eventually playing at the Glastonbury festival. She is currently out on tour on select dates in the US.
There's something about those Swede's and their catchy hooks, whether it's Robyn, Lykke Li or Peter Bjorn and John, they have an uncanny knack for creating a melody that stays in your head. Peter Bjorn and John did just that with one of 2006's most infectious tracks, "Young Folks", off of their LP Writers Block. Now after a long break that included some solo work by Peter Morén, the band is back with their new album Living Thing, due out next week on March 31st. The group is currently offering up a free listen to the whole LP over on their myspace page , which features the new single "Nothing to Worry About."
French director and LaBlogotheque creator Vincent Moon has been showing up all over the place lately. Having produced documentaries for Arcade Fire and The National, and most recently worked on The Dark Was The Night charity compilation shooting videos with Yeasayer, Dirty Projectors, and again The National. But somewhere in his busy schedume Moon found time to set up an intimate performance with Iceland's own, Sigur Ros, at a restaurant in Paris,France. The band gives a great stripped back rendition of one of their new albums finer tracks, "Vid Spilum Endalaust." Check it all out below.

Coming out with one of the finest debuts in 2008, The War on Drugs album, Wagonwheel Blues gave a uniquely fresh take on some classic sounds, creating a killer blend of psychedelic Americana. We caught up with frontman and founder Adam Granduciel in Brussels recently, to chat about the recording of the new disc, hitchin' a train to Philly, and getting caught on technicalities.
'Wagonwheel Blues' is out now on Secretly Canadian.
Ontario Canada's Great Lake Swimmers are about to drop their fourth LP, Lost Channels just next week (March 31st). The album takes its name from a region in Ontario, the Lost Channel, which is a passage of water in the Thousand Islands where mysterious disappearances reportedly happened in the 18th century. With frontman Tony Dekker's soft and haunting voice the new material should fit in quite nicely. You can hear the lead single,"Pulling On a Line" which has been up for a while over at the bands myspace, but the group has also just made available a sneak peak of one of the albums other new tracks, "Concrete Heart" over on it's YouTube channel, or just have a listen below.
With a career that spans nearly two decades, PJ Harvey has consistently delivered her sexy and haunting brand of indie rock. She is out soon with her new LP, A Woman A Man Walked By, out on March 30th, which is a collaboration with John Parish. Harvey also worked with Parish on her (1996) LP 'Dance Hall At Louse Point', as well as Parish co-producing 'To Bring You My Love'(1995), and Harvey's most recent release 'White Chalk'(2007). The first single up off the new disc is for the track, "Black Hearted Love" which wad directed by the highly acclaimed Chapman Brothers(Jake and Dinos Chapman).

An old favorite of mine and one I've been following closely since back in 1997, is singer/songwriter Matthew Ryan. Whether it was his first album Mayday from '97, side project Strays Don't Sleep, or his latest disc, Matthew Ryan vs The Silver State in '08, Ryan always seems to deliver. So i definitely took notice when Ryan recently posted a quick note over on his myspace, that there was a new project he has been working on called The Dead Satellites. Unfortunately there isn't too much other info available on the project, other than there being a new song up called "Shook Down" over on their myspace page, which sounds real promising for what's to come, whatever that may be? We'll keep you posted as more info comes in.
You can get familiar with some of Matthew's body of work below.
With their new hotly anticipated LP on the way, Grizzly Bear are gearing up for what will be a busy Spring and Summer ahead. Their new disc, Veckatimest doesn't hit stores until May 26th on Warp Records, but the band is offering up fans a free download of the mellowed out track, "Cheerleader" over on their website now. You can also hear two of the albums other tracks over on their myspace page, "Two Weeks" and "While You Wait for the Others." The band kick off their tour one day before the albums release at the Sasquatch Music festival in Washington State.

Indie/folk singer, Joshua James hails from Nebraska in the mid-west of the US, and you can clearly hear the wide open plains in James' music, as he crafts delicate and personal melancholy tunes. James recently released a new 5 song EP called, Sing Songs, which are tracks from his forthcoming LP,'Build Me This' sessions that he has been working on for the last year or so. The new disc has a tentative date scheduled for sometime this Spring, and according to James there were a total of 26 songs that were recorded for the sessions with 13 of them making it to the new record. Although the five songs on the EP almost made cut, James felt that they stood out on their own and chose to give them a seperate release. The EP is not availanle in stores, it is only being made available at live shows, and through mailorder. You can purchase it here.

Canada's Sebastien Grainger might be best known for his work as the former singer and drummer of the dance-punk duo, Death from Above 1979, but Grangier and his latest project, Sebastien Grainger & The Mountains have been making waves of their own. On his new self titled LP Grainger wrote and performed nearly all the material himself, with the exception of a few songs that were recorded with a full band. Even though the new work sees a more polished sound than some of his earlier work, Grainger still knows how to lay down a rock n roll beat, as you can hear and see in his new video for the track, "Who Do We Care For." The new video was directed by Graydon Sheppard.

One of our favorite albums to come out in the past half year is Gregory and the Hawk's, Moenie & Kitchi, led by Meredith Godreau. The album is loaded with intimate, rich, beautifully orchestrated numbers that reveal more of a depth with each listen. GATH began in 2003, and became a sort of independent/internet success story in 2006 when she released her Boats and Birds EP, which in part, blew up due to an unexpected feature on Myspace. GATH sold over 15,000 copies of her own work before signing to Fat Cat Records just last year.
Meredith was kind enough to give us some of her time recently for an online interview to answer some of our questions about the new LP and much more.
BTB: G&H are known for being a DIY success story? I was wondering if it actually felt like something big was happening when the whole thing blew up? Or is hard to judge that type of thing from the inside? GATH: Apart from feeling lucky that things have worked out the way they have, and not taking for granted having free time to continue writing music, i haven't sat back and considered the status of the venture so much. the way i look at it is, writing and playing have been a great hobby and way of life since i grew into a person at all/whatsoever and mostly to try and find a way to keep it that way is where my head's at 100 per cent.
BTB:How did you get started in music? When did you first start playing? Any bad experiences when you first started playing out? GATH:No real bad experiences, some imagined ones, and maybe some real ones i created that weren't even gonna happen otherwise. So, yeah, bad experiences i created for myself, just to keep it interesting, sure. My assumption is everybody does that to themselves. I started when i was a kid and i've pretty much been hanging on to variations on the shit i learned when i was 14. like... uh. hey remember alanis? Ironic.
BTB:I was reading that the sessions for the new album 'Moenie & Kitchi' weren't originally intended to be making a full LP? Can you take us through the recording of the album & what happened? GATH: Sure. adam pierce, producer of M&K, came, opened for, and saw our gath release show for the 'in your dreams' album in july 07. He told me he wanted to try and make demos of some of the songs he heard. We'd played full band that night, maybe 7 or 8 people, just for a change of pace since usually it's just me, or just me and mike. Adam said we'd see if i liked the demos, if they worked out, then we could turn it into an album if it was nice. Months passed. It was in the winter and we recorded it at his studio upstate. So there were lots of trips for me from Bushwick, Brooklyn, where i lived at the time, about two (or sometimes more) hours to this fuckin steep ass driveway. sorta like magic kingdom hell, but then once we were there it was always fun. I was in the mood for somebody to take over the stuff i was sick of playing solo, at least for a record or two you know? which is what happened. At the time we were making the record and up until now i feel detached from the writing anyway. i don't think i belong on that record, but i liked how he made it.
BTB:The album has a much bigger vibe than some of your previous work, was that intentional going into making the record? And how much of that had to do with working with producer Adam Pierce? GATH:The sounds you hear on the two other gath releases - boats and birds ep and in your dreams - are sounds that are very much my own. good or bad, that is what i do when left to my own devices. Especially 'In your Dreams'. I felt that album was true brainchild of mine. a lot of m&k i felt nervous about, but i am always nervous. So yes I think you could say it had a lot to do with Adam. It was so revelatory for me, hearing somebody who didn't know me as a person at all interpret my songs into arrangements. It gave me a lot to think about
BTB:Did anything you learned in making this album influence how you think you'll make future records? GATH: In the past i've worked a lot with a steady group of friends, this was a sort of branch out for me, and i did learn a lot. especially technically. There was attention to detail on this record that i've never experienced first hand and i think it shows in the final product. In the future i would like to combine that with a final product that is more simple. When i play alone, of course, nobody hears what's going on in my head, but what i hear in the background is sometimes not so poppy or sharp as is expected. like i said, it was so interesting to learn Adam's interpretation of my work. That now affects my writing as much as it will affect the recording in the future.
BTB:I heard that the name Gregory and the Hawk came about because you didn't want to be labeled a singer/songwriter? Is that true? I hear so many female performers say that, what's with that tag? GATH: For a while i just thought about making a band and i considered the fact that, as far as I was concerned, the songs i was writing were more radio pop than coffee-house-feelings based. You know, I wasn't striving to be a girl holding a guitar, i guess because i already was one. basically, i was riffing. but yeah, screw it, i'm a singer/songwriter.
BTB: What do you love to do when you're not playing music? Hobbies, etc? GATH: Dress up
BTB:Your from Mass. originally? How did you end up living/moving to NYC? GATH: A series of college drop outs and then a friend's couch
BTB: Favorite and least favorite thing about NYC? GATH: A million places to eat out vs leaving in a car
BTB:Do you have a 'guilty pleasure' song on your mp3 player that is embarrasing to admit? GATH: "Crash" by dave matthews band and "shine" by collective soul are two of my favorite guilty pleasures, but i have to admit, i think my taste is quite embarrassing in general
Julie Doiron has been making music since back in 1990 at the young age of 18, playing bass for the indie band Eric's Trip(named from a Sonic Youth song title). The band had a nice underground following up in their native Canada, but later split in the mid 90's. Doiron has released a number of albums since, both solo and collaborative (Wooden Stars, Mt. Eerie), but it may be her playing the past couple of years on some of Eric’s Trip reunion tours that reignited Doiron to explore more of her old sound. Her new disc, I Can Wonder What You Did With Your Day , sees Doiron working with old friend and Eric's Trip mainstay Rick White, delivering an album loaded with indie pop/rock hooks, distortion and Doiron's strong songwriting. Two favorites off the new disc are "Consolation Prize" and "Borrowed minivans" which you can hear below.

Hailing from New Jersey and playing heart on your sleeve, blue collar rock n' roll, the Bruce Springsteen comparisons are endless for The Gaslight Anthem. Admittedly big fans of The Boss though (click here), the band released their emotional sophomore effort, The '59 Sound in mid 2008 to some major critical success, featuring one of the Year's best rock singles, "Great Expectations" which the band released a new video for a short time ago.
The new haunting electronic collaboration between Orenda Fink (Azure Ray, Art in Manila) and Cedric LeMoyne (aka Scalpelist of Remy Zero) known as O+S is a long time in the making, as the pair met over 16 years ago in Alabama. According to LeMoyne ..."When Remy Zero was just starting and becoming successful in Birmingham, Orenda and her musical partner Maria were a 16-year-old songwriter duo that would just hang around. We quickly recognized a talent in them and knew they would do well." The duo then reconnected while Fink was working on an art project in Omaha and decided to bring LeMoyne on board for some help, which eventually turned into the early stages of what is the debut. The new LP comes out next week, March 24th on Saddle Creek, with their first ever tour already underway. Fink says this on the bands sound ..."We listened to a lot of David Lynch soundtracks, 10cc and old 4AD records," ..."I was looking for this balance of light and dark. You don't know why it is dark because it is actually very light sounding. That is what I was going for." Four of the albums tracks are streaming over on the bands myspace, led by the buzzed about new single "Permanent Scar."
Upcoming tour Dates For O+S: 03/16 – Los Angeles, CA – Silverlake Lounge 03/17 – Tucson, AZ – Plush 03/19 – Austin, TX – Maggie Mae’s 03/20 – Austin, TX – Radio Room 03/21 – Austin, TX – Creekside Lounge
We haven't heard from UK's Doves since way back in 2005, when they came out with their very solid Some Cities LP, which had more than a few good tracks on it. So I was definitely curious to hear what the band had to offer up nearly four years later when I heard news of their new album, Kingdom Of Rust getting released on April 7th via Astralwerks. The first single "Kingdom of Rust" sounds like vintage Doves material, urgent and slowly building with a dark melancholy undertone, what the band does well. You can check out the video for the track below. The group is currently out on tour through May in the UK, but they just announced a North American leg of the tour which will kick off in California on May 14th (to see the full list of dates click here).

Not quite sure what the delay was, but Toronto's Forest City Lovers just came out with a new video for one of their older tracks, "Song For Morrie" off of 2006's debut, The Sun and the Wind. The disc blended nicely, elements of folk, indie, and pop capped by the angelic voice of frontwoman Kat Burns. The group has since come out with a new album, last years Haunting Moon Sinking which features the beautiful track "Watching The Streetlights Grow."
Upcoming Forest City Lovers tour dates: Apr 4 Rolly’s Garage - Kat solo Toronto, Ontario Apr 22 The Energy Exchange Sarnia, Ontario May 3 Hulsconcerten Rotterdam May 6 Hasenschaukel Hamburg, Hamburg May 7 Schokoladen Berlin, Berlin May 12 Bohemien Bari, Italy, Bari May 13 Keep It Cool Lecce, Italy, Lecce Jun 27 Zunior.com 5th Anniversary Show Toronto, Ontario
One of our favorite acts out of Portland, the Justin Ringle led project, Horse Feathers , came through Belgium recently. We had the chance to catch up with Justin on everything from playing open mic nights in the early days, to the differences in American and European crowds and the incredible Portland music scene. Check it out!
With a long 4 year break now behind them, Metric are back with their hotly anticipated fourth full length studio album Fantasies. The album isn't due out for over a month, on April 14th, but you can listen to the entire thing right now over at the bands myspace. If it's anything close to 2005's Live It Out the band will be in good shape, and from a quick listen it sounds like a nice mix of dreamy electro indie rock, with the single "Help I'm Alive" leading the charge. The new disc was written by the band in numerous and far ranging locales, ranging from a farmhouse outside Seattle to part being penned in Argentina by frontwoman Emily Haines while on a 'soul-cleansing' trip there. According to Haines ... "For me, the major influences on the record were the places we wrote it: Bear Creek, this utopian farmhouse studio, and then our own studio in Toronto, which definitely brought in the electro, dance and rock elements because the city feels so good right now and so many of our musician friends were around." Starting March 3, Metric will be making 'Fantasies', available for pre-order via ilovemetric.com. Several different packages will be available, with ALL pre-orders coming with an immediate download of "Help I've Alive" (album version) and two exclusive pre-order tracks - "Gimme Sympathy" (acoustic version) and Metric's cover of Pink Floyd's "Nobody Home".
