I was a big fan of this Scottish bands 2009 debut, and now after a four year break the band is back with their second LP titled The Dark, Dark Bright. Falling somewhere between fellow countrymen Frightened Rabbit and The Twilight Sad, the bands music has the ability to be both sad and melancholy and explosive and raw.
The new LP comes out this Nov. 25th and it features the single, "Younblood" which you can watch a new video for below.

'Song of the Week': Frightened Rabbit- "Dead Now"
Frightened Rabbit's fourth studio album, Pedestrian Verse hits stores across the US today. I have to admit I'm a big fan of these guys but when I first started hearing previews of the new LP back in the fall that I was a little underwhelmed. Fast forward a few months and this is an album that has not only grown on me, but one that I've truly fallen hard for. One such track that I completely missed the boat on was "Dead Now' which could be one of the best and catchiest thing the band has done. From the slinky bass line to the dark and somber lyrics mixed with the upbeat tempo, this has been my go-to song on Pedestrian Verse the last week or so.
Give a listen and read along below.
Frightened Rabbit- "Dead Now"
I'm not myself, I am
A broken boxer stuffed with glass and sand
This is not how health should feel
Songs sung from the lungs of the elderly
I'm dead now, check my chest and you'll see
The life has been mined from me, burned for the heat, oh
I'm dead now, can you hear the relief
As life's belligerent symphony's finally ceased, oh
I put my heart where my mouth is
Now I can't thumb it down again
I've gone deviled my kidneys
Now he's living inside of me
If we can't bring an exorcist
I'll settle for one of your stiffest drinks
We'll scream hell towards heaven's door
And now I'll piss on your front porch
I'm dead now, check my chest and you'll see
The life has been mined from me, burned for the heat, oh
I'm dead now, can you hear the relief
As life's belligerent symphony's finally ceased, oh
We're all dead now, join hands and we'll sing
To the glory of hell and the virtue of sin
There's something wrong with me
There's something wrong with me
There's something wrong with me
And there is nothing like poetry
So there you rob me in spite of these tics and inconsistencies
There is something wrong with me
Oh, there's something wrong with me
Oh, there's nothing like poetry
Oh you rob me in spite of these tics and inconsistencies
There is something wrong with me

Song of the Week: Frightened Rabbit-"Fuck This Place"
This might sound crazy, but I think this track may be my favorite thing that Frighetned Rabbit has recorded. That's saying a whole lot because I'm a huge fan of the band. "Fuck This Place" comes off a recent three song EP the band put out (you can still grab it for free HERE) and it features a spine tingling duet with Camera Obscura's Tracyanne Campbell. Every time I hear her vocals come in on the second verse it's pure gold.
Here's what lead singer Scott Hutchinson had to say about the track and working with Tracyanne. "This is going to sound like total bullshit, but please don’t exhale a ‘pfft’ and stop reading when I say, this song started off as a dream. I honestly dreamt that i did a duet with a mystery female vocal on it and the ‘I don’t know these buildings’ line was definitely in that dream.
So when it came to the writing, I had two parts in my head all along. I have been a big Camera Obscura fan for a long time and when Tracyanne said she’d be up for this, I was incredibly chuffed and her vocal is just beautiful. It’s fairly obvious what it’s about, though I don’t think it’s necessarily a love story. Sometimes you just need looking after, and everyone can feel like a lost wee boy/girl from time to time, especially when you spend your life on tour."
Fuck This Place by Frightened Rabbit
"Fuck This Place"
An itch
My eye twitched like a memory of forgotten bars
One of those cities
One of those nights
Everyone's darling
Everyone's sweetheart
Just this drink to hold my hand
One glass of anything
Anything cheap
And I'm here just because
Everyone else has come just to be seen
Oh I don't know these buildings
I think I'm lost
In the perfumed armpit of time
Develop a deadline
These people are bricks
Six feet stones
Wrapped up in bones
Such disappointment on the paper is writ
So i stand still boring and bored
Fetching my eye again
Against the wall
At the end
At the close
Would you be good enough to take me home
'cause I don't know these buildings
I think I am lost
'cause I don't know these building
I think I am lost
Would you
Would you
would you be good enough to take me home?

We Were Promised Jetpacks
When I think of We Were Promised Jetpacks I think of raw emotion and energy. These guys made a brilliant debut back in 2009 with their LP, These Four Walls, which featured the intense track, "Quiet Little Voices." Now the lads from Scotland are back with their sophomore effort, In the Pit of The Stomach which they unveiled earlier this month. Check out the slow building, "Act on Impulse" below & visit their website to keep up on all their upcoming shows.

'Song of the Week': 'Frightened Rabbit-"Not Miserable"
When I last spoke to Frightened Rabbit fromtman, Scott Hutchinson about what was next for the band and the pressure of their next record, he stated ...."Does anyone want to hear me sing a break-up song again? I think I've covered it." Indeed following up 08's brilliant The Midnight Organ Fight was no easy task for the band, with critics and fans falling in love with the brutally honest and personal take of Hutchinson's dissolved relationship on that disc. It's definitely one of my favorite albums of the last several years and with the new disc hitting stores, The Winter of Mixed Drinks, I was anxious to hear the bands latest direction. So often in life high expectations just fall short, but I honestly have to say that the disc sucked me in on it's first listen and has been growing on me more and more with each additional spin. Granted it's not another break-up record, but what did you expect 'The Midnight Organ Fight pt2'? The disc shows a writer moving forward after the chaos of his relationship, maturing in front of us, and dealing with the pieces that are left. Hutchinson to me, cements himself as one of the best songwriters around right now, the guy just flat out knows how to capture the uneasyness of love. In "Footshooter" he sings...."And if I shoot at you, you should shoot at me too. And we can drown in pools of the thick dark words we threw" and there's this from "Swim Until You Can't See Land" ..."Let’s call me a baptist, call this the drowning of the past, She’s there on the shoreline, throwing stones at my back."
There's still the same charm in the music that 'TMOF' had and the band expanded their line-up, and streched the depth of their sound, but if I had to some up 'The Winter of Mixed Drinks' I would have you listen to one of my favorites off the disc,"Not Miserable" to show just how Hutchinson is moving forward, and so should fans expecting another 'Midnight Organ Fight'. Check it out below.
"Not Miserable"
Well this is easier now
I found all the pieces I lost in the flood
And it wasn't that much
And though it's easier now
I will always remember the night that I almost drowned
All alone in a house
And the love that I lost
With all of the shit that came out in the wash
Just a pocket of fluff
I'm not put upon
I am free of from disease no greys, no liver-spots
Most of the misery's gone... gone, gone to the bone
I'm not miserable now
No one knows
No one knows
I'm not miserable
So the hymns that I sung
Prayers for the fucked, from a bitter, forked tongue
Sing of history now
Though the corners are lit
The dark can return with the flick of a switch
It hasn't turned on me yet, yet
I'm not miserable now
No one knows
No one knows
I'm not miserable now
No one knows
No one knows
I'm not miserable
Well this is easier now
I found all the pieces I lost in the flood
And it wasn't that much

new video: The Twilight Sad- "Seven Years of Letters"
There's been a lot of great albums coming out of Scotland this year, with new music from We Were Promised Jetpacks, There Will Be Fireworks, and The Twilight Sad all releasing new works. The latter of which releasing their sophomore LP, the dark and melodic, Forget The Night Ahead this past Sept. on Fat Cat records. The band just unveiled a new video for the album track, "'Seven Years Of Letters", which is the second single from the disc and was directed by Adam Stafford.

Twilight Sad: 'Forget the Night Ahead'
Scotland's, The Twilight Sad release their hotly anticipated sophomore album today in the U.S, with a release date of Oct. 5th in the U.K., Europe, & the rest of World. The band is well known for their brooding, emotional music, and the first two tracks that got leaked off the disc, "Reflection of the Television" and 'I Became a Prostitute" indicated an even darker turn from the band. Here's some of what singer James Graham said about the new album, ... “We have definitely moved on from ‘Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters’, musically and lyrically. One thing that I can promise is that the lyrics are very dark, but you might have to look into them a bit to realise [that]. They are mainly based around things that have happened to me over the past two years, revolving mainly around losing people and being none too proud or happy with myself about my antics and situations I’ve found myself in.”
You can get the full album rundown track by track by Graham over at The Skinny here, and you can also stream the whole album for free over on the Fat Cat website.

'Song of the Week': There Will Be Fireworks-"Foreign Thoughts"
There's been a lot of great young bands hailing from Scotland the past several years, and they have all been getting some well deserved press. But there's been one release that I feel has flown under the radar that needs to be talked about, and that's the new self-titled release from Glasgow's, There Will Be Fireworks. The band which has only been around for a little over a year and a half created a lush 13 song sonic journey that is packed with a depth much wiser than the bands age of 21. All of the instrumentation on the album was recorded live adding to the organic, emotional feel of the disc. One of the highlights for me is this weeks 'Song of the Week', the slow burning, explosive "Foreign Thoughts."Foreign Thoughts - There Will Be Fireworks

New Video: We Were Promised Jetpacks- "Roll Up Your Sleeves"
Scotland's We Were Promised Jetpacks just released their second single (and video), "Roll Up Your Sleeves" from their forthcoming debut, These Four Walls, which is out in the UK, Europe, & the rest on June 15, and in the US & Canada July 7 on Fat Cat Records. The album saw the band working with Ken Thomas (Sigur Ros, Cocteau Twins, David Bowie) and Peter Katis (Frightened Rabbit, The Twilight Sad, The National), with most of the recording taking place live. The group started to get some widespread acclaim after appearing as the main support act for fellow Scot's Frightened Rabbit in 2008, which later led them to also sign on to FR's label, Fat Cat.
The video was directed by Mark Charlton, Bluestar Animation.

We Were Promised Jetpacks- Sign to Fat Cat
Hoping to follow in the footsteps of fellow Scottish buzz bands such as The Twilight Sad and Frightened Rabbit, who have made it to the big stage. We Were Promised Jetpacks are ready for their next step, having just signed to Fat Cat Records. The 4-piece came together in Edinburgh as high school mates in 2003, playing mostly local gigs around Scotland before recording a well received three-track demo. The demo was picked up on big indie station's like KEXP in the US as one of their 'tracks of the day', as well as Q radio and other national stations across the UK. A recent tour of the UK in support of Frightened Rabbit strengthened the buzz following the band and Fat Cat Records jumped on the opportunity to sign the group. WWPJP's have an album scheduled for release in May 2009, with singles to proceed it. You can get a taste of the bands sound with the track "Quiet Little Voices" below.WWPJP on myspace.

Our 'Liner Notes' video intvw w/ Frightened Rabbit
Scotland's Frightened Rabbit has been building a slow and steady buzz ever since their sophomore CD The Midnight Organ Fight hit the scene earlier in the year. Garnering attention the old fashioned way, the band has built their following through first and foremost a more than solid album, a reputation for their electric live performances, word of mouth from die hard fans and even a wave of nearly flawless reviews.
We sat down with frontman Scott Hutchinson from Frightened Rabbit recently while he was at a stop in Brussels to tackle topics such as the bands intimate lyrics, pressure for a follow up album and the Scottish music scene.
