Night Beds- "Borrowed Time" (live version)

There's been a ton of fantastic records to come out already this year, but maybe none better than the debut disc from Night Beds, Country Sleep. While doing the rounds at SXSW several weeks back the band made some time for a performance of the album track, "Borrowed Time" on the banks of Lady Bird Lake in Austin for the folks at 91.7 FM and Art&Seek's On The Road series.

Noah Gunderson- "Poor Man's Son" (Live version) for Invisible Children @SXSW

The fine folks over at Invisible Children recently teamed up with Noah Gunderson while at SXSW last week as part of their 'Almost Live' Series. What was captured was a beautiful live take on his track, "Poor Man's Son" with Noah being accompanied by his sister Abby and his brother Jonathan.

SXSW Photos: Afghan Whigs @ FADER FORT Presented by Converse

The Afghan Whigs are an all-time favorite of mine, and it had been 15 years since I saw the band live. The last time was back on their '1965' tour in '98 at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC. Brought back a lot of great memories. At their Fader Fort show this past Fri. night they were even joined onstage by special guest Usher, who performed their song "Something Hot" with the band as well as his own rock version of "Oh My God."

Very special thanks to Sonia Aneja at Fader.

SXSW Preview: Get to Know Shakey Graves

Shortly after moving from NY to Austin a few months ago I started poking around the local music scene to see what's good in town. One of my very first finds was the one man wonder known as Shakey Graves. For those unfamiliar with him, he's a bit of an old throwback, a rare talent of sorts, and a real performer if you've come across his live work. Armed with just his guitar and suitcase drum kit he delivers an intense blend of soul, blues, and gritty rock that just plain ol' leaves me speechless.
He's most definitely one of my must see acts here at SXSW. Get familiar with a few of his tracks below and visit his website for all his upcoming appearances.

SXSW 'Future of Music Showcase' (RSVP)

So having just moved to Austin, this will be my first year in town for SXSW.  With so many events and happenings and different ways to experience it all,  it's been hard to get a grip on what's best for a newbie like me to make the most of it. With moving costs taking a toll on my wallet this year it looks like I'll be trying to hit a lot of free shows this first time around. This 'Future of Music Showcase' came across my inbox yesterday and I wanted to share it with anyone that's in the same boat as myself.  It really peaked my interest being that it included the super talented Shakey Graves, who I've been dying to check out live.

Here's a bit more via the press release ..."Featuring 25+ bands playing from noon-2am each day, this year’s lineup highlights rising Texas stars like Shakey Graves and The Tontons with a selectively curated mix of acts ranging from Chicago hip-hop to Danish psychedelic folk. It will also feature a special performance from the legendary BP Fallon and the Bandits (Third Man Records), featuring Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Clem Burke and Nigel Harrison (Blondie) as well as Hector Muñoz (Alejandro Escovedo). More headliners will be announced in the coming weeks."
