Penny & Sparrow- "Moss on a Rolling Stone" (Noah Gunderson Cover)

I stumbled upon the Austin, Tx. duo Penny and Sparrow last month sometime when they came out with their brilliant new album, Tenboom. It's been on constant repeat and I've been telling practically everyone I meet to check out this hidden gem of an album. Besides their new LP, the band has also been throwing up some pretty killer cover songs on their YouTube channel, the most recent of which is their take on the Noah Gunderson track, "Moss On a Rolling Stone."

Trampled By Turtled cover Arcade Fire-"Rebellion (Lies)"

I know I'm late to the party on these guys, but ever since seeing them on Letterman last week I've been scooping up as much Trampled by Turtles music as I possibly can. The band just unveiled a cover song of Arcade Fire's hugely popular "Rebellion (Lies)" which they performed for The A.V. Club and their Undercover series
Check out the Duluth, Minnesota bands most recent, Stars And Satellites, which is out now.

We Are Augustines cover Damien Jurado- "Ohio"

Well this is just a slam dunk for me, combining two of my favorite artists into one great listen. We Are Augustines tackle, Damien Jurado's "Ohio" which appears as the B-side to their "Chapel Song" single released in the UK. The track also appears on their recently released iTunes live session, along with the Bruce Springsteen cover, "Tougher Than the Rest" and the previously unreleased, "Ballad of a Patient Man."
You can also catch the band on TV tonight as they'll be performing on the Carson Daly show.

Sharon Van Etten & Shearwater Take on Nicks & Petty

The A.V. Club has been doing a very cool video series called A.V. Club's Undercover series.  The series which kicked off it's third season, gives artists a list of 25 songs to cover, with each time a band selects a track, it then gets bumped from the list. While recently in Chicago, Sharon Van Etten came together with her opening act Shearwater for a pretty kick ass version of the classic 1981 Tom Petty-Stevie Nicks hit "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around".

The latest track to get the cover treatment is St. Vincents "Year of the Tiger." For a deeper look at some other tracks the band tackled, click HERE.

Aunt Martha Covers 2Pac's "California Love"

I've been raving about the new disc from Aunt Martha, Norway, ME to friends, family, co-workers or just anyone who will listen. It's one of my favorites of 2011 and it's pretty safe to say it will appear on my year end list. In addition to the great LP the band is known for taking on and having fun with its share of cover songs, which you can check out HERE. The latest track they tackled is 'California Love" by 2Pac which they threw up n their Facebook page the other day. Check it out.

'Song of the Week': Coeur De Pirate- "Wicked Games" (The Weeknd Cover)

This weeks 'Song of the Week' comes from Montreal singer, Coeur de Pirate. The moniker which means (“pirate heart”) is the stage name of the talented 22 year old BĂ©atrice Martin who sings & writes mainly in French. She recently released her highly anticipated sophomore album, Blonde which features the single "Adieu" which is getting heavy rotation up in her homeland.
But it's her take on a track, "Wicked Games" by a band called, The Weeknd that really caught my attention. The simple piano and innocence in her voice contrasted with the lyrics of the song adds something special that takes the track to a whole different level.
Give a listen below.

Coeur de Pirate - Wicked Games (The Weeknd cover) by Friendsfromfar

"Wicked Games"
I left my girl back home
I don't love her no more
And she'll never fucking know that
These fucking eyes that I'm staring at
Let me see that ass
Look at all this cash
And I emptied out my cards to her
Now I'm fucking leaning on that

Bring your love baby I could bring my shame
Bring the drugs baby I could bring my pain
I got my heart right here
I got my scars right here
Bring the cups baby I could bring the drank
Bring your body baby I could bring you fame
And that's my motherfucking word too
Just let me motherfucking love you

Listen ma I'll give you all I got
Get me off of this
I need confidence in myself
Listen ma I'll give you all of me
Give me all of it
I need all of it to myself

So tell me you love me
Only for tonight
Only for one night
Even though you don't love me
Just tell me you love me
I'll give you what I need
I'll give you what I need
Even though you don't love me

Let me see you dance
I love yo watch you dance
Take you down another level
And get you dancing with the devil
Take a shot of this
But I'm warning you
I'm on that shit that you can't smell baby
So put down your perfume

Bring your love baby I could bring my shame
Bring the drugs baby I could bring my pain
I got my heart right here
I got my scars right here
Bring the cups baby I could bring the drank
Bring your body baby I could bring you fame
And that's my motherfucking word too
So let me motherfucking love you

Listen ma I'll give you all I got
Get me off of this
I need confidence in myself
Listen ma I'll give you all of me
Give me all of it
I need all of it to myself

So tell me you love me
Only for tonight
Only for one night
Even though you don't love me
Just tell me you love me
I'll give you what I need
I'll give you what I need
Even though you don't love me

The National Cover The Philistine’s Jr.- "Twenty Miles to NH pt2"

Producer Peter Katis has been at the helm for some of my favorite albums over the last several years. Producing artists like, The National, Frightened Rabbit, Fanfarlo, Jonsi and We Were Promised Jetpacks, to name a few.  Katis who actually has a band of his own called, The Philistine’s Jr. is now seeing some of the artists he's worked with returning the favor, by covering songs from his bands 2010 album If a Band Plays In the Woods…
The National tackled the song “Twenty Miles to NH Part 2,” and although I can't say I'm familiar with the original, I love The Nationals spin on the track. What's great about it to me is it sounds like nothing The National has done before, and might I say even has a slight Pop feel to it. Give a listen below.

Serena Ryder covers Band of Horses, "Funeral"

This is a cover that's been around since the Spring, but I just recently discovered through the very good, I Am Fuel You Are Friends blog , run by Heather Browne. Toronto singer Serena Ryder is known for her powerful vocal range, but here on this cover of Band Of Horses, "Funeral" shows patience and restraint on the explosive choruses that give her version a more haunting vibe.
The song appeared on a four song covers EP that also included, "Slow" by Kylie Minogue and "Ramblin Man" by Hank Williams. Most recently Ryder worked as a lead vocalist on Great Lake Swimmers, Lost Channels, and put out her latest album, Is It O.K. earlier this year, with a physical release slated for this Tuesd, Nov 3rd.

William Fitzsimmons covers Kanye West-"Heartless"

In what might seem like one of the most unlikely pairings on paper, William Fitzsimmons cover of the Kanye West track, "Heartless" turns into one of the better fits of a cover song that I've heard this year. Fitzsimmons sparse take on the song gives it a new meaning and a heartbreak not felt on the original. The track appeared in a new article and interview with Fitzsimmons in Billboard magazine. Here's what William had to say when asked about the track.

You're obviously well-known for your own songwriting, what was it about Kanye's "Heartless" that made you want to perform it?
I've really always just wanted to get into top-40 hip-hop, as you can tell by the stuff I've done before, it's the natural next step [laughs]. But really, I'm drawn to anything that has a melancholic chord to it, and that song certainly has one. And there's something sort of fun of finding that, especially a song that people sort of don't take to be that serious, not that it's not a wonderful song-it's sort of in the vein of Jose Gonzales, who did a cover of one of Kylie Minogue's old songs called "Hand on your Heart." And it's straight up kind of bubble-gum pop, but the way he does it is he kind of rips the production to shreds, and it's actually kind of a heartbreaking and sweet and poignant song. I think that's true about "Heartless," and was maybe lost on some people, because it's Kanye and everything and the way it was produced.
To read the full Billboard article you can go here.
William also just added some new tour dates to his schedule which you can check out here.
