New Music: Damien Jurado- "Silver Timothy"

Damien Jurado will be releasing his 11th studio album sometime next month titled, Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Sun. He just released the first single today, and if you think the title has a psychedelic feel to it, you can listen to the spacey jam of a first single, "Silver Timothy" which Jurado unveiled a new video for.

We Are Augustines cover Damien Jurado- "Ohio"

Well this is just a slam dunk for me, combining two of my favorite artists into one great listen. We Are Augustines tackle, Damien Jurado's "Ohio" which appears as the B-side to their "Chapel Song" single released in the UK. The track also appears on their recently released iTunes live session, along with the Bruce Springsteen cover, "Tougher Than the Rest" and the previously unreleased, "Ballad of a Patient Man."

Song of the Week: Damien Jurado- "Working Titles"

This weeks 'Song of the Week' comes from the brilliant new Damien Jurado LP, Maraqopa that hit stores yesterday. Although this is Jurado's 10th LP, I'm inclined to say that what I've heard so far has been some of his finest to date. One track in particular that I can't get off my speakers from the new disc is "Working Titles." One of the things that makes it so special to me is that it sounds like nothing that Jurado has ever done before, he's in completely new territory and it sounds like he's been mastering it for years. The lyrics, the incredible harmonies, the arrangement, the whole vibe of the song, everything about it just floors me. I call it the Song of The Week but I could easily call it my Song of the Year so far.
Watch Damien playing the song live at a recent show at the Neptune Theater in his hometown, joined by an all-star Seattle line-up that includes, Jon and Josiah from The Head and The Heart, Galen from Pickwick, Bryan John Appleby and Jessica Dobson from Deep Sea Diver and The Shins.

Stream Damien Jurado's, 'Maraqopa'

I spent a good part of my day yesterday being completely unproductive, as I found out that the new Damien Jurado album, Maraqopa was streaming in full over at The AV Club. It was totally worth it though because the album is fantastic. I listened to it at least 3-4 times and although it might be too early to call it one of his best, I would have to put it in the running. 
The new full-length comes out on February 21st, and is available now for pre-order HERE.

Damien Jurado just released the second single off his upcoming album, Maraqopa. The track titled  “Museum of Flight” is a beautiful slow builder, and it's available now as a free download if you head over to Secretly Canadian's soundcloud page HERE. In addition you can also now pre-order Maraqopa which comes in a variety of different formats with bonus tracks.

Damien Jurado- "Nothing is the News"

I have to admit this new one from Damien Jurado took a little time to grow on me with it's psychedelic vibe, but now I'm hooked. The new track, 'Nothing Is The News" comes off his upcoming album, Maraqopa which is due out on February 21st via Secretly Canadian. The new work sees him again working with producer Richard Swift, who produced his last LP Saint Bartlett.

Damien Jurado unveils New Album Teaser

Seattle's Damien Jurado is one of the most gifted songwriters around today. With 9 albums already to his credit, Jurado is a guy that doesn't get near the cred he deserves. Nobody does heartache better than him. He recently announced plans for album number 10 on his website along with a short video teaser. The new LP sees him working again with producer Richard Swift who manned the controls on Jurado's last studio album, St. Bartlett.

Song of the Week': Damien Jurado-"Arkansas"

In my opinion one of the most under looked songwriters out there, Damien Jurado, will soon be releasing his new album, Saint Bartlett, on Secretly Canadian this May 25th. For the new disc Jurado teamed up with fellow label mate Richard Swift who helped produce the LP. Saint Bartlett was recorded entirely at Swift’s National Freedom studio in Oregon, in just under a week with only Jurado and Swift as the performers.

This one may have appeared even higher if we just didn't recently come across it. Although it's still relatively new to our ears, it had to be included in the top 10. Gorgeous, dreamy, textured pop gems that seem to build and build.



8 Blitzen Trapper- Furr
Our 3rd entry from Portland in the top 20, Blitzen Trapper deliver a detailed new album that grows on you with each listen. Great rootsy old Americana feel, with excellent harmonies.






7 Jessica Lea Mayfield- With Blasphemy So Heartfelt
Amazing debut from the 19 year old Mayfield. Strong album from start to finish and she sounds wise beyond her years. A distinct fresh voice that we think you'll be hearing a lot of for years to come.





6 Helio Sequence- Keep Your Eyes Ahead Our 4th Portland band in the top 20,the album features two of the years strongest tracks in, "Lately' and "Shed Your Love". Singer Brandon Summers severely damaged his vocal cords, which led the band to re-invent it's sound. The result is an ambitious album that beautifully blends, indie rock and folk, with ambient and synth led numbers.


5 Ra Ra Riot- The Rhumb Line If you know the story of the tragedy the band went through, losing there drummer John Ryan Pike to a drowning accident while recording the LP, you can't help but feel the heartbreak that plays out on the disc. Pike wrote some of the LP's most ironic tracks such as, "Dying is Fine" and "Ghost Under the Rocks." Excellent melodic indie rock album.



4 She Keeps Bees- Nests
In a music world that is often times lacking some true soul to it, She Keeps Bees delivers. The NYC powerful two piece is gritty and raw, and frontwoman Jessica Larrabee is one of the finest there is.





3 Damien Jurado- Caught In The Trees
Usually known for his fictional storytelling prowess, Jurado gets personal on his latest disc and delivers his best work yet. For a guy that's been around as long as he has, it's about time he gets recognized for this disc.





2 Bon Iver- For Emma, Forever Ago
What can you say, the guy had a killer year, but still one that I just kept coming back to again and again. One of the years most intimate records. It truly takes you away to that cabin in the Wisconsin woods, where you can feel the despair.





1 Frightened Rabbit- The Midnight Organ Fight
Raw, visually blundt, emotional, exceptionally strong songwwriting. Plays out very cinematically with a beginning, middle and end. You won't find a better album from start to finish then this one.

One of my recent obsessions of late has been Damien Jurado and his new album, Caught In The Trees. Having been around since the mid 90's Jurado has put out an impressive and diverse catalouge of work, ranging in differing styles over the years. Usually known for his gift of fictional story telling, the new disc sees Jurado shift gears into much more personal territory, which results in what could be his finest work yet. We had the chance to catch up with Damien at a recent tour stop in Belgium, where he sat down with us to discuss the Seattle music scene in the 90's, his new album, and how the music business has changed over the years.

We've been on a bit of a Damien Jurado kick lately, ever since seeing him perform in concert a few weeks ago. In fact we featured his song "Sheets" as our 'Video & Song of the Week' shortly thereafter. Helping us feed our latest fix of Jurado is the brand new video for the track "Caskets", which is another great song off of his Sept. release Caught In The Trees.

'Video & Song of the week': Damien Jurado-"Sheets"

While relative newcomers such as Bon Iver gobble up all the press attention and buzz, longtime Seattle musician Damien Jurado continues to quietly go about his business with little fanfare. Jurado, who is equally as gifted a songwriter as any of his peers recently came out with his latest and possibly finest work, Caught In The Trees this past September. The new album sees Jurado craft an intensely personal journey, which is rare for him, as he is known for his gift of fictional story-telling in his music. One of the many standouts off the LP is the haunting track "Sheets", which ever since seeing Jurado perform in concert recently, just won't seem to get out of my head. Damien Jurado- New album news

Damien Jurado over the last few years has been best known for his quiet folk tales, a sort of urban storyteller. On his forthcoming new album, Caught In The Trees,which drops on Sept 9th on Secretly Canadian, the singer is said to be returning to more rock influenced roots and delving deeper within himself with more intropective lyrics. The change in direction might remind longtime fans of Jurado's early days playing in the Christian-tinged Coolidge, which featured future Pedro the Lion's David Bazan, whose music was more personal, a style that Jurado departed from to pursue the soft, darker folk songs.
Speaking to CMJ of the new direction Jurado says ...."It is the first time that I have ever written from a personal standpoint, unlike in the past, where all of my songs were short stories. There is a line in one of my songs where I say, 'How does it feel to be what you sing about?..."I'm talking to me".

Starting in August Jurado will be heading out on tour to support the new album. You can listen to the new track "Gillian Was A Horse", which is up on his Myspace now.
