new music from The Wooden Sky this August

I just caught wind of possibly the best news I've heard all Summer. One of my personal favorites, the Toronto band, The Wooden Sky have a new album hitting stores this Summer titled,
If I Don't Come Home You'll Know I'm Gone. The album is out this August 25th, and if your not familiar with the band now is your chance to get more acquainted with their music. With the plethora of great Americana based music coming out of Canada these days it's easy for some bands to slip under the radar, but were predicting that these guys will be getting some well deserved hype with this release. You might want to go back and check out their 2007 disc, When Lost at Sea also, which was one of the finest albums of '07.

Two new songs off the forthcoming disc, "Something Hiding For Us In The Night", and "Bit Part", are currently streaming over on their myspace page now.

'Song of the Week': We Were Promised Jetpacks- "Roll Up Your Sleeves"

You can't read an article about the Glasgow band, We Were Promised Jetpacks without hearing the names of their fellow countrymen Frightened Rabbit, and The Twilight Sad mentioned in the same breathe. I'm sure they wouldn't mind the comparisons as long as they see the same success and impact that both those bands have had in Europe and overseas. WWPJP just released their full length debut, These Four Walls, which features the track, "Roll Up Your Sleeves."

get to know- The Rural Alberta Advantage

Canadian band, The Rural Alberta Advantage just saw the re-release of their album, Hometowns this week, after signing on with indie label, Saddle Creek. The album, which has been floating around since as early as 2008, being sold at their live shows is finally out to the masses. RAA was born out of singer/songwriter Nils Edenloff's exodus from Edmonton, Alberta to Toronto, Ontario in 2003 that inspired the band's name, and his dealing with his homesickness and loneliness after the move.
The odes to his former hometown have been earning rave reviews since it's initial self-release, with the bands biggest break coming in late '08, when the digital music retailer eMusic.com selected the RAA from a fan recommendation as an eMusic Selects artist, later earning the band new publicity and exposure to over 400,000 music fans and subscribers. 'Hometowns' went on to became the highest-selling Selects album in history and a critical darling overnight. The band also had a breakthrough performance at SXSW in Austin this year, that helped set up more buzz for the discs re-release. Get familiar with the track "Frank,AB" from 'Hometowns' below.

'Song of the Week': The Roadside Graves-"Far and Wide"

There's no doubt that New Jersey indie bands often take a back seat in street cred to their neighbors across the river in Brooklyn or NYC. One band that fits into that under looked category is Metuchen, New Jersey's The Roadside Graves. The alt-country, barroom inspired band just released their third full-length LP, the 18 song strong, My Son's Home, which according to the band was inspired from everything from the HBO series, 'Deadwood',and the John Steinbeck novel, 'The Moon is Down', to stories about soldiers in times of war.
Here's a quote from the band about the new disc ...."We wanted our songs to speak to the conflicts- tragic, humorous, absurd- that arise in an individual as one attempts to eke out an authentic existence in the face of the challenges that characterize social life. The songs celebrate and eulogize this process and the costs it exacts on the souls of the characters. They are songs about birth and death , and everything in between."
'My Son's Home' is out now on Autumn Tone Records, you can check out the romping lead track, "Far and Wide" below.

Sharon Van Etten sings"For You"

Local Brooklyn singer/songwriter Sharon Van Etten wears her heart on her sleeve on her fantastic debut disc, Because I Was In Love. The new album seems to be putting Van Etten on the map, and it's no wonder, with it's intimate, and deeply personal nature, that sees Van Etten speaking almost directly to the people in her life. One of the discs finest tracks is the lead single, "For You", which Sharon recently performed a cool version for the people at Kevchino, while drifting in a paddle boat in Central Park.

Liam Finn releasing new EP

2008 was a breakthrough year for New Zealand singer/songwriter Liam Finn, who happens to be the son of Crowded House's Neil Finn. Finn dropped his eclectic debut, I'll Be Lightning, which saw him taking on most of the instruments and recording himself. For the new 5 song EP, Champagne In Seashells, due out on September 1 via Yep Roc, Finn enlists the help of tour mate and friend, Eliza-Jane Barnes, who if you saw Finn play live, she played with him on most of the dates.
Finn, who also toured alongside the likes of Eddie Vedder, and the Black Keys last year, should be announcing more dates soon, as well as news on a new full-length that is scheduled for release sometime next year.
And you can check out our interview that we did w/ Liam from late last year below.

Champagne In Seashells track list:
01. Plane Crash
02. Long Way To Go
03. Won't Change My Mind
04. Honest Face
05. On Your Side
