Regina Spektor: New album this June

After almost 3 years since her last album, I had almost forgotten how much I liked Regina Spektor's 2006 LP, Begin To Hope. But after hearing news of the NYC based, Russian born Spektor's new album, Far, coming out this June 23, via Sire Records, I quickly remembered just how impressive her last disc was.
As for the new disc, 'Far', Spektor brought on board more than a few big named producers to lend a hand, ranging from "Jacknife" Lee and 'Begin to Hope' producer David Kahne, to Mike Elizondo and Travelling Willbury himself, Jeff Lynne.

Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan coming to the States

On the surface it's probably one of the most unlikely pairings you could imagine. The dark and menacing baritone that is Mark Lanegan (Queens of the Stone Age, Screaming Trees, Gutter Twins), and the soft angelic voice of Isobel Campbell(Belle and Sebastien), but somehow it's worked. It's worked so well in fact that the pair recently came out with their second effort, Sunday At Devil Dirt. The sophomore album which has been out overseas in the UK and Europe since May, continues to see the duo explore their rootsy alt-country, folk and blues sounds, similar to their '06 debut, 'Ballad Of The Broken Seas' which received wide spread acclaim.
The pair had yet to bring their live show to the US in support of 'Sunday at Devil Dirt', but it's been announced that they will soon be performing in the States together, with three dates scheduled just next month in NY and California.

Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan tour dates:
May 27 New York, NY Webster Hall
May 30 San Francisco, CA Bimbo’s
May 31 Los Angeles, CA The El Rey

'Song of the Week'- get to know Piers Faccini

With an Italian Father, an English Mother, and his family moving him to France when he was 5, it's no wonder that singer/songwriter Piers Faccini sounds as nomadic as his life has been. Faccini, who was actually born in London and speaks four languages, considers himself to be a bit of a mongrel, being able to absorb different cultures and music from around the world.
Faccini released his first solo album in 2004 to critical acclaim in France and much of Europe, and is now out with his latest LP, Two Grains of Sand, which saw a release in the States just last week. The new disc features some really stunning, intimate tracks, but the best of the lot is the new track, " A Storm Is Going to Come " which you can listen to below.

The Helio Sequence touring with Keane

Most bands try to reinvent their sound for a reason, Portland Oregan's, The Helio Sequence were forced to go back to the drawing board for their 2008 disc, Keep Your Eyes Ahead. The band which consists of Brandon Summers on guitar and vocals and Benjamin Weikel (who has also played for Modest Mouse) on keyboards and drums, almost suffered a devastating setback when Summers damaged his vocal cords in 2005, and was forced to relearn to sing. The band which has been around since '99, adapted their sound to fit Summers' vocals, and the result turned into one of the years best LP's, mixing elements of electronica, indie rock, and folk, along with two of the years best tracks, "Lately" and "Shed Your Love."
The group have been touring for most of the past year in support of 'Keep Your Eyes Ahead', and the band continues to look ahead themselves, as they have added a leg of dates as the support act for Keane, on a big arena tour starting next month, culminating with a show in Radio City Music Hall in NYC on May 27th.

Swedish singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Emil Svanängen, aka Loney Dear has drawn some big comparisons with his latest disc, Dear John. get to know: Lady Of the Sunshine

If your familiar with the Australian duo, Angus and Julia Stone, then you already know a little bit about Lady of the Sunshine. The new project is one half of the pair, Angus Stone’s new solo debut. Angus shows a more dark and moody side on the new disc, Smoking Gun, which just came out in the States this Tuesday. Where in his work with Angus and Julia Stone, they leaned more towards the folk based, traditional stylings, Angus delves into heavier guitar, and even rhythm and blues territory.
Angus wrote, sang, and played electric and acoustic guitar on the album, of which he co-produced with Govinda Doyle, who played drums and bass.
Stone had this to say on the new project, “I’ve been skipping off in between tours for about a year now to shake my head of these songs” ... "Every one of the emotions in your head has it’s own voice and this album is what became of them."
The first single off the new album is, "White Rose Parade", which you can see a video for below.

Jessica Lea Mayfield: premieres 1st video, hear two new songs

Any regular visitors of the blog surely know how much we love Jessica Lea Mayfield and her debut disc, With Blasphemy So Heartfelt. We've been hyping the album since back in mid '08, and she even landed at #7 on our year end 'best of list', so it's cool to finally see Mayfield getting some well deserved praise. Like we've said in the past the album is stacked from start to finish with heart breaking songwriting, and a depth that many her age (19) can't begin to express. Mayfield has just released a new video for one of the albums strongest tracks, "Kiss Me Again" which just premiered over on on Stereogum music blog. The video was directed by the talented people over at Crackerfarm.
And check out below to hear two new tracks not on the disc, that Mayfield has been playing out on tour, "Nervous Lonely Night" and "Grown Man."

Son Volt: sign to new label, ready debut

One of the legends of the Alt-Country genre, Son Volt, are about to drop a new album called, American Central Dust this July 7 on their new label, Rounder Records. The disc will be the bands 6th full length, and the 12 new songs are supposed see a return to the bands roots, like on their 1996 debut, Trace. The former founding father of Uncle Tupelo, Jay Farrar had this to say about signing to the new label... "Rounder has shown a long term commitment to music forms, like folk and blues, that I have a lot of respect for. Going with Rounder has been a kind of a full circle continuum -- the first Rounder person I met with was instrumental in booking Uncle Tupelo gigs years ago"
Son Volt will be heading out on the road in the summer, but dates are still in the works, stay tuned for more info.

'Video & Song of the Week': Fever Ray- "When I Grow Up"

Different project, same sinister results. Swedish electronic artist, Karin Dreijer Andersson, best known as half of The Knife, is out on her own with her new solo outing, Fever Ray. Andersson still knows how to deliver the same dark, mysterious, and haunting beats on the new disc, from the tracks "If I Had A Heart" and "Keep The Streets Empty For Me", to this weeks choice for 'Song of the Week', "When I Grow Up", Andersson's spine chilling vocals can still give the strong hearted the creeps.

Oxygen Ponies: sophomore disc on the way

The second album from the Paul Megna led project, The Oxygen Ponies comes out this May 19th on Hidden Target recordings. Fittingly titled, Harmony Handgrenade, Megna deconstructs his lo-fi formula from his successful, critically acclaimed self titled debut. Right from the slow building opening track "Love Yr Way" forward you know your in for a different affair. Megna's raspy voice is still at the core, but the instrumentation is wider and the arrangements more in-depth, complete with strings, horns, and backing vocals present throughout. Where his first disc was more autobiographical, 'Harmony Handgrenade' sees Megna tackling the everday struggles of the working class pitted against corporate America. Tracks to look out for include, "Grab Yr Gun", "Fevered Cyclone", and "Villains."
4 tracks are available to stream over on his myspace now, as well as a sneak peak video preview of the album below.

Alexi Murdoch: new headlining tour

Decidedly quiet since releasing his full length debut, Time Without Consequence back in 2006, ambient/folk singer Alexi Murdoch is about to embark on a new headlining tour. The month long trek kicks off in Washington State tonight and takes Murdoch east, across the US eventually wrapping up in Boston on April 23rd. Supporting Murdoch on tour will be the Portland Cello Project http://www.myspace.com/celloproject on select dates, and Dawn Landes http://www.myspace.com/dawnlandes for the other dates.
For those that don't remember, Murdoch first burst onto the scene in 2002 with some strong backing from KCRW’s influential DJ Nic Harcourt. Harcourt asked Murdoch for a few songs to play on his syndicated program, 'Morning Becomes Eclectic', which then got the ball rolling to an eventual four-song EP, which received critical and mass support. His brilliant debut, Time Without Consequence followed in 2006 featuring the tracks, "Orange Sky", "All Of My Days", and one of my favorites, "12."

Marissa Nadler: Adds dates across US & Europe

Marissa Nadler's music has been described as everything from, Ambient and Americana, to Nu Folk and space rock. Whatever the case may be, there's no doubt that Nadler has a haunting voice, and her latest disc, Little Hells could be her finest work yet.
