Kittens Ablaze-"Gloom Doom Buttercups"

This Brooklyn six-piece's music has been described as “grand” and “orchestral,” with a line-up that features violin, cello, and a lead singer on the drums. While their music has gotten compared to Ra Ra Riot, and Cursive, their rousing and playful live shows are what have been bringing the band attention.
The band’s emotionally-charged new disc, The Monstrous Vanguard was released earlier this year led by the song, "Gloom Doom Buttercup" which you can get familiar with below.

Wednesday in Words (#5) Fanfarlo-"I'm a Pilot"

A new feature we started up last month taking a closer look at some lyrics that have caught our ear. This week we take a look at a track off of Fanfarlo's uplifting debut disc, Reservoir, and the song, "I'm a Pilot." There was always the theory floating around that the song was loosely centered around Howard Hughes, but I was never quite sure if that was true or not. But in a recent interview with the website laist, singer Simon Balthazar spoke to the songs origins.
Here's the question and what Simon had to say ... (the lyrics are below)
Is anyone in the band really a pilot?
Ah, no. The name kind of came first. Then I thought - who's a pilot? And thought about Howard Hughes, so the song is about certain aspects of his persona, specifically him going nuts, locking himself into a room recording endless tapes.

Fanfarlo- "I'm A Pilot"
You can't trust that sound,
You're sleeping in all the time,
You'll see me on the screen,
Through all the other soul's dark walls,
With the sun.
The mad circus says good night.
The tape machine exposed,
from all its spinning round the moon.
I've scratched all my reels,
I've bitten all my nails to the bone,
Like a stone.
You come back and thrown up.
Away From the top,
and away from the drills,

But kid I'm a pilot,
It's all I believe in (x2)
You can ride on my back.

And time on your hands.
You spent your money down by the tracks,
you had the drivers sign your arms.
My hospitals will welcome you home,
Like a tomb.
With gun marks aching,

To look at your grace,
and believe what you say.
But kid I'm a pilot
It's all I believe in (x2)
You can ride on my back.

If I stay in this room, they'll remember me for my youth
If I stay in this room, they'll remember me for my youth.
If I give it all up (x3)
But kid I'm a pilot,
It's all I believe in (x3)
You can ride on my back

The band will be appearing next week in NYC with a few shows scattered across the CMJ festival.

Members of Magnolia Electric Co. & Centro-matic team-up for new project

Two of the most heralded indie-folk songwriters of the last decade or so, Will Johnson of Centro-matic, and Jason Molina of Magnolia Electric Co., are teaming up for a new project, aptly titled Molina and Johnson. As the story goes Johnson approached Molina at the merch table following a Magnolia Electric Co. show in Texas of September 2007, and within a week the pair had already begun to talk about a collaboration. Five months later the two were ready to start recording in Denton, TX ...."We were basically ready," Johnson said. "For ten days we wrote, co-wrote, workshopped, complimented, scrutinized, drank, invited friends to come play music, smoked, made lots of notes and drawings, drank a little more and shot the BB gun off the back porch when we just needed some time and space. In the throes of all this, our record was made in the late February sun."

Molina and Johnson will be available on Secretly Canadian November 3 in the US, and November 2 in the UK.

new Lykke Li-"Possibility" from New Moon soundtrack

We were just talking about the new jam packed New Moon soundtrack the other day, when we posted the new video from Death Cab For Cutie's contribution, "Meet Me on the Equinox." Now Swedish singer Lykke Li's take is the latest to pop up on the net, with her new song called, "Possibility." Normally known for her more sugary pop songs, the new track shows a darker side to Li's music. She recently talked with MTV sharing some insight behind the lyrics in the song. ...."It's really serious, because, if you're really, really in love, and somebody leaves you, that's a very serious thing," ... "And so the lyrics are like, 'When you walk, you walk like a thief with blood on your hands, because I die when you leave me. ... It's dark."

The soundtrack is out October 20 via Chop Shop/Atlantic, with the film hitting theaters November 20th if your interested.

'Song of the Week': XX-"VCR"

This young slow burning indie-pop band from South London has been generating a nice buzz with their self titled debut disc. The band initially received attention for their new wave style covers of Womack and Womack's "Teardrops" and Aaliyah's, "Hot Like Fire" (which appears as a bonus track on the new cd).
One of my favorites off the new disc is the track, "VCR" which you can hear below.

Robert Francis: Honesty is the best policy

At only 21 years old, LA based singer Robert Francis is readying his major label debut, Before Nightfall, which comes out, Oct. 13th digitally (via Itunes) and everywhere else October 20th on Atlantic records. Francis is a guy who wears his heart on his sleeve, and on the new LP which follows up his '07 indie release 'One By One', which detailed the emotional chaos he endured after a failed relationship, this time around 'Before Nightfall' takes a look back on that break-up through the the glimmer of hope that appears in starting over and moving on to something new. The album has an earthy and mature quality to it, which could be due to his earnest song writing, and his drawing on a variety of influences from Americana and folk, to blues, and rock.
Calling his new work the soundtrack to everything he's gone through, Francis also says ... “Honesty is what makes a good song,” ... “I don’t think there’s a reason to write unless you’re writing about something that’s deeply important to you. If I write anything, it has to be 100 percent heartfelt. There’s not a shred of anything within my songs that isn’t 100 percent genuine.”
One of the highlights of the new album is the Dylanesque, fragile track, "Nightfall."

Old Canes: New album & tour dates

After nearly three and half years, Chris Crisci's second effort under his solo moniker, Old Canes is seeing the light of day. Crisci, a member of melancholy post-rockers, The Appleseed Cast, took the solo title quite literally, basically creating the new LP, Feral Harmonic alone in his basement studio, and tackling the majority of the instrumentation himself. The album which is his first for indie label, Saddle Creek records, shows a different side for Crisci, showcasing an energetic, joyous folk mixture, led by the upbeat foot stomper, ‘Little Bird Courage’ which you can check out below.
The album hits stores this October 20th.

Wednesday in Words (#4): Noah and the Whale-"Blue Skies"

Break-up albums can create some of the most epic and emotional works, and London indie-folksters, Noah and the Whale are putting it all out there with their new release, The First Days of Spring. Along with the new disc, the LP is being accompanied by a film that chronicles the entire length of the album. The disc and film, as the title and lyrics suggest, centers around a running narrative of a post-break up, and the starting over again theme, which is widely thought to be about frontman Charlie Finks former relationship with singer Laura Marling. It's not only an ambitious endeavor from the band but a deeply personal one, which is highlighted by the standout track, "Blue Skies."
Check out the song and lyrics below.

Blue Skies - Noah And The Whale

This is a song for anyone with a broken heart
This is a song for anyone who can't get out of bed
I'll do anything to be happy
Oh, 'cos blue skies are coming
But I know that it's hard

This is the last song that I write while still in love with you
This is the last song that I write while you're even on my mind
'Cos it's time to leave tohse feelings behind

Oh, 'cos blue skies are coming
But I know that it's hard

I don't think that it's the end
But I know we can't keep going
I don't think that it's the end
But I know we can't keep going

get to know: Ohbijou

One of the best, and maybe most confusing descriptions I've heard to describe Toronto, Canada band, Ohbijou's music is, 'sad and uplifitng'. That might sound odd on the surface, but one listen to the bands new sophomore album, Beacons, and you might better understand. Beacons which came out this past Summer, is a building and sweeping orchestral pop gem, led by hush voiced singer, Casey Mecija, whose songs romanticize the streets and neighborhoods of her home city.
Mecija actually started out as a solo artist, before recruiting her younger sister Jennifer, later expanding the groups sound and arrangements to the now 7-piece ensemble.

new video: Loney Dear- "I Was Only Going Out"

With a flood of new albums on our radar the past several months, it's easy to sometimes temporarily put to the side or forget about an album that came out in early '09. Back in January the Swedish singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Loney Dear left us with a big impression with his latest disc, Dear John, that was a warm, and richly textured, pop masterpiece. The album which was in early consideration for a best of list for '09, has popped back up on our radar, as Loney Dear just released a new video for the track, " I Was Only Going Out", which debuted on Pitchfork the other day.
In other Loney news, his label Polyvinyl has announced plans to reissue the classic Loney Dear album, The Citadel on Nov. 24th.

'Song of the Week': Frightened Rabbit- "Swim Until You Can't See Land"

Picking up right where they left off with 2008's stellar, The Midnight Organ Fight, Frightened Rabbit are back with a new single titled, "Swim Until You Can't See Land." The new track is slated to appear on the bands upcoming and as of yet untitled next album, which is due out sometime next Spring. The single also features the b-side, "Fun Stuff" which has appeared before as "Last Tango in Brooklyn", with some new arrangements this time around.

You can GO HERE to the fatcat website to stream the single and b-side now.

Here's what singer Scott Hutchinson had to say about the new track, ...“’Swim Until You Can’t See Land’ was the title I had in my mind before I even started writing the album; I was becoming more and more interested in the idea of a rejection of the habits and behaviour most people see as normal, and in turn embracing a certain madness. It’s about losing your mind in order to reset the mind and the body. Forget what’s gone before and wash it out. This is not necessarily a geographical journey, as the ‘swim’ can involve any activity in which you can lose yourself. It’s a good introduction to the record as the theme unravels therein.”

video madness from Lucero

Lucero have been gearing up for their major label debut, which hits stores tomorrow, and in conjunction with the albums release the band commissioned a fan made music video for each of the 12 songs off of 1372 Overton Park. They started premiering a new video every Thursday, beginning a few weeks back, leading up to the release date, and with three new one's out over the last two weeks that brings the total to four out of twelve so far. Today we bring you the videos for "What Are You Willing To Lose", Goodbye Again", and "Johnny Davis", all of which give a good taste of the bands new expanded sound with the Memphis inspired horn section.
