Fanfarlo announce new North American dates, perform on David Letterman

It seems like the UK group, Fanfarlo have been gaining steam more and more with each month, ever since their album was re-released on Atlantic/Canvasback this past Fall. Their album Reservoir which landed at number 3 on our best of 2009 list has been getting critical acclaim for the band, and they just announced a new round of North American headlining dates for this March and April with Lawrence Arabia and Robert Francis as support.
The band whom just finished up a string of European headline shows, also stopped by the Late Show with David Letterman this week to make their national television debut, playing "Harold T. Wilkins."
And in other news, this week the group released an exclusive 6-song iTunes Sessions EP.

Fanfarlo: New Headlining tour

Fresh off two successful short stints barnstorming across the U.S., including just last week at CMJ, UK group Fanfarlo have announced a full on headlining tour in the States. The band has been generating a steady buzz all year ever since they self released their debut, Reservoir which resulted in them getting signed by Atlantic/Canvasback and getting access to the masses.
The headlining dates kick off in Chicago on Nov. 9th and wraps up in NYC on Dec 18th, hitting the West coast and Toronto, Canada in between.

Wednesday in Words (#5) Fanfarlo-"I'm a Pilot"

A new feature we started up last month taking a closer look at some lyrics that have caught our ear. This week we take a look at a track off of Fanfarlo's uplifting debut disc, Reservoir, and the song, "I'm a Pilot." There was always the theory floating around that the song was loosely centered around Howard Hughes, but I was never quite sure if that was true or not. But in a recent interview with the website laist, singer Simon Balthazar spoke to the songs origins.
Here's the question and what Simon had to say ... (the lyrics are below)
Is anyone in the band really a pilot?
Ah, no. The name kind of came first. Then I thought - who's a pilot? And thought about Howard Hughes, so the song is about certain aspects of his persona, specifically him going nuts, locking himself into a room recording endless tapes.

Fanfarlo- Live at The Bell House 9/22/09

Watching Fanfarlo at The Bell House in Brooklyn last night, you get the feeling that this might be one of the last times you'll get to see the band in such a small and intimate style venue. Just one night prior in NYC, the band sold out The Bowery Ballroom, after the show got moved from the much smaller Mercury Lounge. Last nights show at The Bell House was the bands last of a quick one week tour of the U.S, with select dates on the East and West Coasts, and all this comes without the band even having a full on release of their fantastic debut Reservoir, which has only been available digitally or through the bands website. That will all change shortly as the group recently signed on with Atlantic/Canvasback for Reservoirs re-release, which is due out Oct. 6th.

The band who's music ranges from sweeping anthems to gypsy-infused folk, kicked off the night with a slightly stripped back version of "Drowning Men," with just three members, before swelling back later to it's usual six and seven. Besides a slight tuning problem in the middle, the band was tight throughout the set, interchanging instruments and harmonies, with Cathy Lucas especially strong, lending backing vocals, along with violin, mandolin and xylophone. With the just under one hour set, the band played mostly tracks off of 'Reservoir", with particular highlights for me being the full band sing along of,"The Walls are Coming Down", "Harold T. Wilkins" which I liked much better than the album version, the slow stomping "I'm A Pilot" and the delicate epic, "Comets." The band did manage to blend in a new song before the night was done called, "Waiting in the Wings" which showed a diverse sound that should quell the critics, before wrapping up the night with encores of "Ghosts," which saw the band handing out whirling noise-making tubes (check the video below) to help with the intro. The festivities ended with a cover of Neutral Milk Hotel's, "In The Airplane Over The Sea" before Balthazar lost his voice, which he said was starting to go on him.

new video: Fanfarlo-"The Walls Are Coming Down"

It was just recently announced that Fanfarlo's moving debut album, Reservoir will be getting a physical release date in the U.S. this Oct 6. Forget all the Arcade Fire comparisons you may have heard about the band, the disc really stands out on it's own, as it's packed with quality tracks.
The band also just came out with a new video for their second single, "The Walls Are Coming Down" featuring a classic Houdini straight jacket escape by Roslyn Walker, one of the few living professional escape artists. The video was directed by visual artists Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard.

Fanfarlo: getting U.S. release and add select shows

One of my favorite albums to come out so far this year has been Fanfarlo's debut disc, Reservoir. Their uplifting anthemic music has drawn comparisons to bands like Arcade Fire, and Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah, and so far the album has only been available digitally or through the bands website, but on October 6th the band is getting a physical release date here in the U.S.
Prior to the albums release, the band will be playing a handful of shows across the States starting in Seattle on Sept 14th and ending in the NYC area on the 21st and 22nd.

Fanfarlo playing "Luna" live, download the new album for $1

One new album that I haven't been able to put down over the past month is Fanfarlo's, Reservoir. Fanfarlo does some Bandstand Busking

One of my favorite new discoveries of late is the UK group, Fanfarlo. The bands joyous new album, Reservoir has grown on me more and more with each listen, unravelling little intricacies at every turn. The band recently stopped by the UK site Bandstand Busking, where they performed four songs off of the new album, including "Finish Line" and "Harold T. Wilkins." 'Song of the Week': Fanfarlo-"Drowning Men"

The London based six piece, Fanfarlo, led by Swede, Simon Balthazar have been drawing comparisons to groups like Arcade Fire, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah. Crafting uplifting, sweeping, folk tinged songs that incorporate instruments like, trumpet, mandolin, violin,glockenspiel and various homemade contraptions, you can understand that there are some definite similarities. The group has been garnering praise in the UK, and on their latest self released LP, Reservoir, the band retreated to Connecticut to work with producer Peter Katis, who has recently helped establish bands like, The National, The Twilight Sad and Frightened Rabbit.
