Our new 'Liner Notes' interview w/ Wintersleep

2008 was a big break through year for Canadian band, Wintersleep. The band took home the prize for 'Best New Band' at the Juno Awards (Canada's Grammy's), and also saw their 2007 album, Welcome to the Night Sky get released in the US and overseas. We had the chance to sit down with the band while at a recent stop in Brussels to chat about their year, the Canadian music scene, and their latest LP.

Video & Song of the Week: Wintersleep-"Weighty Ghost"

Largely overlooked outside of their home country of Canada, Wintersleep have had themselves a pretty busy 2008. The band started the year by winning the Juno Award(Canada's Grammys) for Best New Artist for their critically acclaimed album, Welcome to the Night Sky . The LP which has been out since late 2007 finally saw it's US release just last week. Speaking of the US, the band are currenty out on an extensive tour of the US with Portugal the Man and Earl Greyhound, before heading over to Europe in December for some dates.
This weeks choice for 'Video & Song Of the Week' comes from the Much Music Video Award winning track off 'Welcome to the Night Sky', "Weighty Ghost".

Fresh off their recent win for best new band at the Juno Awards (Canada's version of the Grammy's), the band Wintersleep have put out a new video for the song "Oblivion" off of their fantastic '07 album Welcome to The Night Sky. The group is currently on tour in the UK and will be stopping in NYC on May 21st at the Mercury Lounge.

Canada's equivalent of the grammy's, the Juno Awards took place last night in Calgary. As we've said before here, there's a heap of good young talent being cranked out north of the border. One example of this is the relatively new up and comers Wintersleep, who walked home with the best new group award. In 2007 the band released Welcome to The Night Sky which is actually their third album and saw the band expand and experiment with their sound. Some tracks worth checking out are "Drunk on Aluminum" which reminds me a little of Death Cab for Cutie & the melodic sing along stomper "Weighty Ghost". The album, Welcome To The Night Sky has yet to be distributed in the US, but can be purchased on the band's website.

Other notable happenings at the Juno's... Feist took home the Album of the Year & Artist of the year trophy's and best New Artist of the year went to the talented Serena Ryder.
