End of the Week Wrap Up (2/01/13)

Wow there was a whole lot of killer new music out this week and I didn't get to touch on it all, so I wanted to do quick little recap on some highlights that never got posted.

Again a great week for new releases but none more exciting than the new one from Local Natives for me. This was one of my most anticpated for 2013 and it delivers. It's hard to pin down a favorite track right now because it changes daily but if your looking for something quiet check out "Colombia" HERE or maybe something a little more uptempo listen to "You & I" HERE.

Speaking of hotly anticipated albums Night Beds debut 'Country Sleep' is streaming over at Pitchfork now in advance of the Feb. 5 release date. You'll be finding this on everyone's 'best of list' at the end of the year guaranteed. Stream it HERE

Shovels and Rope made their television debut on David Letterman the other night, playing an emotional version of "Birmingham" that I think thoroughly impressed the host. Watch it HERE

High Highs debut album 'Open Season' came out this past Tuesday and among the many sweeping, dreamy tracks is the single "In a Dream." Listen HERE

Wake Owl  released this week what I would call a bit of a folk masterpiece with their phenomenal 5-song EP 'Wild Country'. You can stream all five tracks over on their Soundcloud page HERE

I've been waiting quite some time for this debut album from Trixie Whitley. It's called 'Fourth Corner' and it finally hit stores this week, and it's packed full of gritty soul & blues inspired tunes like only this talented young voice can deliver. I've been following Trixie Whitley for a few years now, from her solo work and Ep's to her collaboration with the Daniel Lanois led project Black Dub. Like many fans of the soulful singer, we've been looking forward to her debut disc and that time has finally arrived. Whitley's forthcoming debut album Fourth Corner hits stores this January 29th in the U.S. and February 11 overseas. Check out the new single "Need Your Love" for a taste of what's to come.

Trixie Whitley releases 'mixtape' featuring 2 new songs

Trixie Whitley fans have been waiting for this day for quite a while. The soulful Brooklyn singer recently announced that she'll be releasing her first solo full length called Fourth Corner. It's being released in the US this January 29th, 2013 and in Europe on February 11th. In advance of the new disc Whitley just put out a free mix (tips suggested) via Noisetrade that offers two of the new songs from her upcoming debut, "Breathe You In My Dreams" & "Hotel No Name." The mixtape also features a live performance from Rockwood Music Hall in NYC, an exclusive outtake, and a recording of the track she did w/ Black Dub (Daniel Lanois, Brian Blade) "I'd Rather Go Blind."

Trixie Whitley: New live EP

With soul music seemingly making a big comeback lately, this could be a very good year for talented young singer, Trixie Whitley. She's a bit of a throwback, one listen to her voice and you can tell that Whitley is an old soul, she packs as much raw emotion into her music as anyone I've heard lately. She may be best known for her singing with, Black Dub, a collaboration featuring producer Daniel Lanois and drummer, Brian Blade, but Whitley has a few solo EP's out there as well. The latest of which is a Live EP she just put out from a performance at The Living Room in NYC from this past year. catch Trixie Whitley live in NYC tuesd. 9/27

You might know talented singer, Trixie Whitley from some of her more recent work playing in Black Dub, a collaboration featuring  mega producer, Daniel Lanois and drummer, Brian Blade. She also  has some limited solo work out there and I had the pleasure to see her live back in 08'-09' sometime. As powerful and soulful a voice as you'll ever hear, Trixie just armed with a piano and a guitar wowed me that night.  If your in the NYC area you can see for yourself, as she's performing this Tuesday, Sept. 27th at Rockwoodmusic Hall.

an interview w/ Trixie Whitley

Besides spending time workin' on the blog, I've had the chance to do some corresponding for Spin Magazine's new site, called Spin Earth.tv. I wanted to share one of the recent interviews I did for the site with the amazing young singer, Trixie Whitley. You may recognize the name from her father, Chris Whitley, who tragically passed in 2005, but at the young age of 21, Whitley has grown up fast, doing everything from acting, and DJ'ing, to touring Europe as a Dancer. She is currently working on a new trio project with famed producer Daniel Lanois and drummer Brian Blade, which should be out this Fall.

Video & Song of the Week: Trixie Whitley-"I'd Rather Go Blind"

Armed with a killer voice and fantastic musical genes, soulful singer Trixie Whitley is a name you should be hearing a lot more of as the year goes on. Whitley is currently hard at work recording her debut, which has seen her working with the legendary Daniel Lanois at the helm. This weeks 'Video & Song of the Week', "I'd Rather Go Blind" comes from some of those recent sessions in late '08, that captures Trixie working with drummer Brian Blade and a very Rick Rubin looking Daniel Lanois. If you head over to her myspace you can also hear another one of the new track's that might make the disc, "Undress Your Name."
