Song of the Week: Torres- "Honey"

Because I attended my first SXSW several weeks ago and because I'm a bit of a music geek, I've been reading a lot of post-SXSW coverage. Inevitably there's always picks of the 'big winners' & 'bands to watch' that come out of the week of mayhem & musical overload. One name that keeps reappearing though is the name Torres, which is the project of Nashville singer Mackenzie Scott. She released her self-titled debut LP last month and upon my first few spins I can most definitely see what all the fuss was about. There's been quite a few Sharon Van Etten & PJ Harvey references which I can see a little of, but I think you just need to give her a listen and hear for yourself either way.
A good start is the intense slow building track, "Honey"which you can stream below.

Palma Violets- "Step Up for the Cool Cats"

In honor of Palma Violets releasing their debut disc '180' here in the U.S. today I wanted to highlight another track off the LP. "Step Up for the Cool Cats" is the bands latest single off the new disc. After some shows at SXSW earlier this month the band is currently back in the UK & Europe performing, with some scheduled dates back in the U.S. at the end of April & early May. Check their website for all the details.

Dan Croll- "From Nowhere"

Dan Croll is a young singer out of Liverpool who has caught a lot of buzz back in his homeland with his eclectic debut EP, From Nowhere. It just dropped here in the States earlier this month and if his appearances at SXSW are any indication, he'll be riding a wave of good vibes here as well.
Of his wide ranging sounds on the EP Croll recently told Spinner ..."I've tried to find a balance between my folky/acoustic roots and my recent experimentation with electronic production and synths... I'd say it's a good indicator of what's to come from my debut album."

Noah Gunderson- "Poor Man's Son" (Live version) for Invisible Children @SXSW

The fine folks over at Invisible Children recently teamed up with Noah Gunderson while at SXSW last week as part of their 'Almost Live' Series. What was captured was a beautiful live take on his track, "Poor Man's Son" with Noah being accompanied by his sister Abby and his brother Jonathan.

Chvrches- 'Recover' EP

Glasgow band, CHVRCHES were one of the big buzz bands I heard about going into this years SXSW.  Unfortunately I didn't make it in to any of their shows, but I did manage to catch a live session the band performed for SiriusXM, and I really liked what I heard from the group on top of their insanely catchy first single, "Recover." The trio has recently signed up with Glassnote records here in the U.S. (Phoenix, Mumford & Sons, Daughter) and their Recover EP is due out at the end of this month, on March 26th.
Try out a couple of the tracks below.

SXSW Photos: Afghan Whigs @ FADER FORT Presented by Converse

The Afghan Whigs are an all-time favorite of mine, and it had been 15 years since I saw the band live. The last time was back on their '1965' tour in '98 at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC. Brought back a lot of great memories. At their Fader Fort show this past Fri. night they were even joined onstage by special guest Usher, who performed their song "Something Hot" with the band as well as his own rock version of "Oh My God."

Very special thanks to Sonia Aneja at Fader.

SXSW Preview: Get to Know Shakey Graves

Shortly after moving from NY to Austin a few months ago I started poking around the local music scene to see what's good in town. One of my very first finds was the one man wonder known as Shakey Graves. For those unfamiliar with him, he's a bit of an old throwback, a rare talent of sorts, and a real performer if you've come across his live work. Armed with just his guitar and suitcase drum kit he delivers an intense blend of soul, blues, and gritty rock that just plain ol' leaves me speechless.
He's most definitely one of my must see acts here at SXSW. Get familiar with a few of his tracks below and visit his website for all his upcoming appearances.
